Tree removal in Nangana
There is no town in Nangana, only farmland, and almost all of it is under ESO1. It sets no minimum size, so paddock trees and bush need a permit unless an exemption covers them, and a few of those are written for farms.

ESO1 across the farmland
We sampled 44 points across Nangana, 300 m apart. All but one, a park, were Green Wedge farmland, and every one of those 43 was under ESO1, Cardinia's northern hills overlay. It sets no minimum size.

- Paddock trees, bush and regrowth all need a permit unless an exemption covers them.
- 10 m
- The 10/30 rule for a house built or approved before 10 September 2009. All 44 points were in a Bushfire Prone Area. The Bushfire Management Overlay, which adds a 50 m rule, covered 19. How they work.
ESO1 also exempts 6 m around a house, but only on a lot under 0.4 ha, which a farm won't be. Its other exemptions include the part of a tree over a home's roof where cutting it is needed for fire protection, normal pruning, and the listed environmental weeds. Dead trees wait for a council officer's assessment, and standing dead trees 40 cm or more across are not exempt.

Exemptions for working farmland
ESO1 has three exemptions written for land like this:
- Regrowth. Seedlings or regrowth under 5 years old, on land that was lawfully cleared and is kept for cropping or pasture.
- Dam walls. Any vegetation on an existing dam wall, where it could affect the wall's stability.
- Firewood and fencing for your own use, by cutting. Not standing trees 40 cm or more across, and not living native vegetation where your land is under 10 ha. Gembrook's page has the detail.
Clearing native vegetation on a farm can also need a permit under the state's native vegetation clause, which applies to land of 0.4 ha or more. That clause has its own exemptions. Ask the council before the work starts.

A locality without a town
Fifty-four people lived in Nangana at the 2021 census. It has no town centre or post office and shares Cockatoo's postcode, 3781. Two post offices opened here in 1902, Crichton's and Nangana. Nangana closed around 1910, Crichton's took its name in 1918, and that office closed in 1964.
