Tree removal in Tremont
Tremont is nearly all national park. For the few private blocks, the ranges rule applies, and an environmental overlay covers much of the suburb as well.

The rule for Tremont's private blocks
Fifteen of the 25 points we sampled around Tremont were national park and public conservation land. Nine of the other ten were in the Green Wedge A Zone. All 25 were under SLO1, Yarra Ranges' ranges overlay, which needs a permit for native vegetation of any size and for a tree with a trunk more than:
- 1.1 m
- around at 1.3 m above the ground, about 35 cm across.
- 4 m
- A plant whose base is within 4 m of a lawful building is outside SLO1.
- 10 m
- The 10/30 rule, for a house built or approved before 10 September 2009. All 25 points were in a Bushfire Prone Area. The conditions.
Seventeen points were also under ESO1, which protects native vegetation and keeps a permit on a standing dead tree more than 1.3 m around, although SLO1 lets dead vegetation go. On a block with both, check both.

A suburb that is mostly park
Almost all of Tremont is inside the Dandenong Ranges National Park, and 69 people lived here at the 2021 census. A tree in the park, or one leaning over your fence from it, is on public land and not yours to take down. The post office, known as Dunstan's until 1919, closed in 1977. Tremont was in the path of the Dandenong Ranges fire of January 1997.

The rule next door
- Ferny Creek and Sassafras
- SLO1 again: 1.1 m around, 4 m from a building.
- The Basin, Ferntree Gully and Upper Ferntree Gully
- Downhill into Knox (Upper Ferntree Gully is partly Yarra Ranges), where the overlays measure a tree differently.
- Upwey
- The township overlay, SLO22: 50 cm around, 2 m from a building.
The permit guide covers both councils.
